Prepare for Deutsche Bank's video interview by connecting your experience to the division, role and financial-services work you want to do. Use the current candidate instructions for the actual assessment. The questions and exercises in this guide are original preparation material, not leaked employer prompts.

You may have searched for “Deutsche Bank HireVue questions.” The official FAQ reviewed here describes a recorded video interview without naming HireVue as its vendor. This guide therefore uses the bank's own description.

TL;DR

  • Read your invitation and each assessment's instructions before starting.
  • Prepare separate reasons for the bank, division and industry.
  • Use real experiences that you can explain under follow-up questioning.
  • Practise recording before the employer assessment.
  • Keep external practice separate from completing the real selection exercise.

What format does Deutsche Bank currently publish?

The student and graduate FAQ describes situational judgement, a behavioural questionnaire, an ability test and then recorded video. Its video section currently specifies two minutes to prepare, two minutes to record and one attempt for each response. It also describes a platform test and example question before the interview. Check your invitation for the instructions that apply to your programme. Deutsche Bank application FAQ.

This is a dated summary of published guidance, not a guarantee that every office or future application uses an identical process. No fixed total question count is asserted here.

How should you answer why Deutsche Bank?

Build the answer from a genuine choice. Start with the work you want to explore, identify a relevant feature of the opportunity, and explain how your experience led you there. The useful connection is between you and the role, not between a bank's brand and a list of flattering adjectives.

For example, if a course project made you interested in financing decisions, explain what you analysed and which question it raised. Then research the division you applied to. Do not assume that an example about acquisition advice explains an application to every other banking function.

HireVue Practice is an independent preparation tool for timed mock interviews. It is separate from Deutsche Bank's recruitment platform and does not determine an employer result.

Use the firm-fit guide to test whether your reasoning remains specific when you replace the bank's name.

A worked answer, and why it holds up

I applied to the corporate finance programme because the work I keep coming back to is the case for a decision rather than the model behind it. In my placement I rebuilt a weekly cash forecast and found a receivable that had been double counted, and the useful part was explaining to the finance manager why the old number had looked fine. Deutsche's European corporate client base is where that kind of work sits closest to the client conversation, which is the part I want to learn in a first job.

Three things make that answer defensible. It names a task rather than a brand quality. It carries one specific piece of evidence with the candidate's own contribution visible. And the final sentence would be false about a different bank, which is the test that most "why this firm" answers fail.

The recorded format gives you roughly 90 seconds, so the answer above is close to the right length. Our HireVue question families guide works through the same shape for the other four families, and the full HireVue guide covers the format and what is actually assessed.

How do you explain why the role rather than just the industry?

Write down two tasks the role involves and one skill you want to develop. Check those tasks against the actual job description. Then select an experience that shows an initial foundation for that work.

Original exercise: A student compared two businesses for a university assignment. The student could explain how inconsistent assumptions changed the comparison and why checking them became the most interesting part of the project. That is evidence of analytical care. It is not evidence of having advised either business.

Develop the answer with three questions: what did you do, what did you learn, and why does that learning make this role a sensible next step? If the final sentence could point to any job, return to the role description.

How do you explain why financial services?

Separate interest from evidence. Following markets may have prompted your curiosity, but explain what you did with that interest. You might have investigated how financing affects a company's choices or compared how different businesses generate cash.

Deutsche Bank's FAQ asks candidates to explain their fit with the bank, their chosen work and the financial-services industry. It also recommends authentic responses and advises against using AI tools to answer the assessment questions. Use this guide for advance preparation and follow the employer's rules during the actual assessment. Deutsche Bank video-interview guidance.

Do not use an answer generator during the employer exercise. Prepare your own reasoning in advance so you can respond to the question actually asked.

How should you practise a recorded answer?

Choose one original prompt: “Which experience helped you decide to explore this division?” Make a short outline, record an answer, then listen without reading your notes. Check whether the listener can identify your point before the example ends.

On the second attempt, change one thing. Remove an irrelevant opening, explain an ambiguous action, or replace a vague result with an accurate observation. Repeating the same script can make it smoother without making its reasoning better.

The recorded interview guide covers the broader preparation method. The behavioural questions guide helps you build a wider set of real experiences.

How do the other assessments affect preparation?

Treat each exercise as a separate task with its own instructions. A motivation answer does not substitute for numerical reasoning, and an answer about teamwork does not establish how a situational-judgement question is scored.

For numerical work, practise identifying units and checking whether the result makes sense. For judgement practice, explain the competing responsibilities and the information you need before deciding. The situational-judgement guide develops that reasoning without pretending to reproduce Deutsche Bank's scoring key.
