Are investment banking interview prep courses worth it?
Decide whether an investment banking prep course is worth paying for. Compare learning, practice, certificates, and cost with a worked buying test.
On this page
A paid course is worth considering when it teaches a skill you cannot yet perform and gives you a format you will use. If you already understand the material but struggle to answer questions, our recommendation is to try IB Offer's graded practice before buying another course.
IB Offer publishes this guide and benefits when readers choose our product. We compare preparation jobs rather than claim that one purchase guarantees an offer.
When is a course worth paying for?
| Your gap | First choice to test | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot build a model your process requires | A modelling lesson with working files | You need instruction and spreadsheet practice |
| You cannot explain a concept without time pressure | A strong free explanation first | Confirm that paid teaching adds something missing |
| You understand but omit logic in answers | IB Offer graded practice | You need attempts and specific corrections |
| Your written answers work but spoken answers wander | A knowledgeable peer mock | You need live follow-ups and delivery practice |
| You want a certificate to create interviews | Review your application and experience first | Course completion is not an interview invitation |
| You already own a similar guide | Use it before buying another | More overlapping content may not solve the gap |
What are you actually buying?
| Product type | What you pay for | A useful completion test |
|---|---|---|
| Financial modelling course | Sequenced instruction and model exercises | Build and explain a model without following the video |
| Interview guide | Organised explanations and question coverage | Answer a changed version of the question without notes |
| Graded practice platform | Repeated attempts and feedback | Correct a weakness and carry the reasoning into a fresh question |
| Human coaching | Individual judgment and live challenge | Handle follow-ups and explain what changed after the debrief |
Wall Street Prep's Premium Package focuses on financial and valuation modelling. The BIWS Interview Guide focuses on interview preparation. These specific products should be compared by the work you need to do, not just by provider name.
When is a modelling course the right purchase?
Consider one when your target process includes spreadsheet work and you cannot yet complete it independently. Examples include linking financial statements, translating operating assumptions into a forecast, and checking why a model does not balance.
Watch a sample lesson if available. Then close it and reproduce the relevant task. You need to know whether the instructor's explanation makes sense to you and whether the course asks you to do the work.
Before buying, check the curriculum, software requirements, access period, exercise files, and support terms. Our modelling-test guide explains how to distinguish different assignments. The invitation should determine your preparation priorities.
When is more practice a better purchase?
If you can follow a DCF lesson but cannot explain the process in an interview, more video may not solve the problem. Attempt an answer and identify where it breaks down.
IB Offer's technical drills let you work on that explanation and examine feedback. For a reference alongside the attempt, use our DCF walkthrough.
Before buying a course, try the DCF structure checker, a public DCF question, or a paper LBO practice generator. These quick reps help separate a knowledge gap from a practice gap. If the decision is a static question bank versus feedback-driven practice, see IB Offer versus the 400-questions guide.
Here is an original diagnostic. Ask yourself to explain why a change in working capital affects cash flow. If you cannot explain the mechanism even with time to think, return to instruction. If you understand it but omit it in your answer, practise retrieval. If the written answer works but the spoken version wanders, rehearse aloud with follow-ups.
Try the distinction with numbers. Suppose operating accounts receivable rises by 20 and operating accounts payable rises by 5, with every other working-capital account unchanged. What is the cash-flow effect of the change in net working capital?
Check the working-capital reasoning
Net working capital rises by 15: 20 minus 5. All else equal, the working-capital adjustment reduces unlevered free cash flow by 15. More cash is tied up in receivables, partly offset by additional supplier financing through payables. This isolates working capital; it does not calculate total free cash flow.
If you missed the mechanism, study it. If you knew the mechanism but missed the subtraction, practise a changed example. If the written answer is correct but hard to say clearly, rehearse aloud. One example diagnoses one gap, not your entire readiness.
For deeper instruction, read working capital and accrual versus cash accounting.
Does a certificate help you get an interview?
A useful skill and a useful credential are separate questions. In its own certification guide, Wall Street Prep says certification does not replace core recruiting factors such as grades, networking, programme reputation, and relevant experience. It also says recruiter interest varies. That is the provider's explanation, not an independent hiring study.
A modelling course can help you learn work you may later perform on the job. It still does not demonstrate that an employer will invite you to interview. If the course on your shortlist is Training the Street, read our direct IB Offer vs Training the Street comparison before you pay. Judge the purchase by the skill you will practise and the assignment in front of you.
How should you compare the cost?
Compare the expected cost of the period you will actually use, what the package includes, and whether you already have access through school. A subscription and a one-time course purchase can serve different time horizons.
Do not justify a purchase solely by dividing the price by a hoped-for banking salary. That assumes the result you are trying to achieve. Instead, decide what you will complete each week and which current weakness the resource will address.
For a closer product comparison, read IB Offer versus Wall Street Prep or IB Offer versus BIWS, and confirm current provider terms before paying.
If you want to test a modelling topic without buying a course, use the public LBO question or LBO sources and uses builder. If the problem is explaining the answer rather than building the model, start a matched IB Offer drill.
Use an original planning calculation: out-of-pocket cost divided by independent outputs you realistically expect to complete. A hypothetical 200 course used for four completed model exercises costs 50 per planned output. If you complete only one, it is 200. This measures use, not educational quality or hiring return. A free resource still costs study time.
What should you do before buying today?
Write one sentence: “I need this resource because I cannot yet ___.” Add: "By my chosen date, I will produce ___ without following the lesson." Fill the blanks with a task and an output, not a feeling.
| Check before purchase | Your evidence |
|---|---|
| What did I already try? | Name the free guide, sample lesson, or owned resource |
| What still fails? | Identify knowledge, calculation, recall, delivery, or judgment |
| What will the paid product add? | Name its exact exercise, module, or feedback format |
| What will I finish independently? | Set a model, answer set, or mock debrief as the output |
| What terms apply? | Read current access, cancellation, refund, and software requirements |
Then attempt that task. If answer practice is the gap, start with IB Offer. If the gap is instruction, inspect a course sample. If you cannot judge the attempt, get feedback from someone qualified before buying several overlapping products.
If cost is the binding constraint, start with our free preparation plan. To compare learning formats, use the prep-platform guide.
Frequently asked questions
Will a course certificate get me an interview?
Do not treat a certificate as a hiring guarantee. The purchase decision should rest on what you will learn and demonstrate.
Should I buy several competing interview guides?
Start with one organised source and use it. Add another only for a specific gap the first does not cover.
Is a practice platform a replacement for Excel training?
No. Graded answer practice and building a spreadsheet are different tasks. Choose the resource that supports the work you need to perform. If you're weighing a specific modeling-training provider instead, see IB Offer vs Peak Frameworks for how that course stacks up against graded interview practice.
