ChatGPT can cover flexible interview rehearsal, including spoken practice, but it should not be your sole source for technical accuracy, topic coverage, or current firm facts. Our recommendation is to pair flexible rehearsal with IB Offer's finance drills, credible technical explanations, and a human mock interview. A convincing conversation alone is not enough evidence that your preparation is complete.

This article is published by IB Offer. We recommend our product for structured finance-answer practice and give ChatGPT credit for a different use: a flexible session that you direct.

What can ChatGPT help you practise?

OpenAI Academy describes students using ChatGPT for interview rehearsal, including investment banking preparation. That supports using it as a practice aid; it does not establish that it replaces every other form of preparation. Read OpenAI's examples.

OpenAI documents ChatGPT Voice for spoken back-and-forth, subject to account and plan limits. You can use the prompt below in a written session or ask for one spoken question at a time. Voice capability does not establish finance-feedback accuracy.

For a finance-specific baseline, try the public DCF practice question or the investment banking question generator. You can then compare the feedback loop with the open-ended session you build in ChatGPT.

An effective session needs a defined job. “Help me prepare for banking” leaves a great deal unspecified. A better starting point identifies the topic, interview level, and how you want to respond.

Here is an original prompt you can adapt:

Help me rehearse an analyst-level investment banking interview on enterprise value and equity value. Ask one question and wait for my answer. Then ask one follow-up based on what I said. After I answer it, separate technical errors from unclear explanations. Identify any claim I should verify against a source. Do not invent facts about my experience or predict a hiring outcome.

The prompt sets a useful format. It does not guarantee accurate feedback.

How should you check the feedback?

OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce incorrect or fabricated information. Verify important technical claims and current facts. This is a documented limitation, not a measured error rate for banking questions.

Start with a question whose answer you can verify. Our enterprise-value guide is one reference. Compare the explanation of claims on the business, not just the final number.

If the feedback changes, ask what assumption changed. If it cites a source, open the source and check that it supports the actual claim. For a recent transaction, use the buyer's, seller's, or issuer's announcement and distinguish announced terms from a completed deal.

Keep uncertainty visible in your notes. “I have not verified the closing date” is more useful than memorising a date that merely appeared in a response.

Test a changed assumption instead of accepting praise

Use this original example after a session on enterprise value. Give the assistant these assumptions: enterprise value of 90, debt of 25, excess cash of 5, and no other claims. Ask it to check equity value, then ask what changes if cash rises to 8 with enterprise value and debt unchanged.

Check the reference answer

Initial equity value is 70: 90 minus 25 plus 5. The revised value is 73: 90 minus 25 plus 8. The additional excess cash increases the amount attributable to shareholders under the stated assumptions. A response that holds equity value constant needs to explain which assumption it changed; it cannot silently override the question.

This catches a specific mistake; it cannot establish general accuracy. Ask for the reasoning, compare it with the source, and repeat with a different concept. Apply the same scrutiny to feedback from IB Offer or any other AI tool.

When should you choose IB Offer instead?

Choose IB Offer when you want to open a finance question and practise without designing the session yourself. Start a technical drill, examine the feedback, and choose a fresh attempt that addresses the gap.

We have not run an accuracy benchmark proving that IB Offer outperforms ChatGPT. The recommendation rests on workflow fit. Both AI-assisted routes require you to engage with the reasoning rather than accept a score as authority.

For a comparison of drills and spoken simulations, read our AI preparation tool guide.

You can also test a different topic with public valuation and comps practice or public behavioral practice. If the structured workflow fits, create a free account to keep practising.

How can you practise behavioral answers without sounding scripted?

Bring a real experience first. Write down the situation, what you personally did, and the result you can support. Then ask for questions about missing detail rather than an invented replacement story.

Try this original prompt:

I will describe a real example from my experience. Ask me about the decision I made, the alternatives, my own contribution, and what I learned. Do not add achievements or numbers. After the discussion, help me remove detail that does not answer the question.

Use our behavioral interview guide to choose the next example. Say the answer aloud in your own words after the writing session.

How do you check what the conversation missed?

Use a topic map outside the chat. Our technical interview guide provides a starting point. Mark each relevant topic as not tested, needs repair, or explained with a fresh example. Keep behavioral, firm research, and the interview format on the list too.

A fluent conversation can stay inside the topics you prompted. It cannot show that an unasked topic is covered. Before moving an item out of "needs repair", attempt a new question without the previous answer on screen.

For sources, start with the employer or transaction party for current facts, a reputable technical explanation for a concept, your own recomputation for arithmetic, and a knowledgeable reviewer for disputed nuance. Do not paste confidential employer, client, transaction, or personal records into a rehearsal. Use fictional numbers and experiences you can discuss appropriately.

What does a complete preparation loop look like?

Learn a concept, attempt an answer, check the feedback, correct the gap, and try a different question. Then rehearse aloud. For your target employer, add current role research and truthful reasons for your interest.

Our firm-fit guide helps connect that research to your own experience. IB Offer practice supplies the next answer attempt. The aim is an explanation you can defend when the interviewer changes the question.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise an AI-generated answer?

Understand the reasoning and express it yourself. A memorised answer can break when an assumption changes or the interviewer asks about your experience.

Does an AI score prove I am ready?

No. It is feedback on a limited sample, under that tool's criteria. Check fresh questions, spoken delivery, and the actual requirements of your process.

Should I use an assistant during the real interview?

Follow the employer's rules. This guide is about preparation before the interview, not undisclosed live assistance.
